Then we went to Apple Service Centre at Orchard Road to seek for repair.
As mentioned by many people in many online forums, Apple representative has recommended us to get a new MacBook Air instead of repair, due to the high repair cost.
The Apple technician even recommended us to try outside to see if we can get a lower repair cost for the machine.
After the visit, I tried 2 third party repair shops, both come back with the recommendation to change the logicboard.
It's kind of weird for the logicboard to die slightly 3 years without physical or water damage, all she did is just perform a reset due to the machine is slow (I actually feel the slowness and ask her to do the reset lol).
I also looking at Apple Certified Refurbished MBP but end up I decided to go for the repair, for few reasons:
- We are not heavily dependant on the MBP, it's just a machine that my wife use for her personal staffs. Both of us have company laptop and I have an iPad Pro, so except for some tasks that involved a lot of typing (like writing this blog post), we won't even boot up the machine.
- If we decided not to repair, then the machine will become a piece of junk, which is a pity caused other parts of the machine are all working fine before it went died.
- Repair is the most cost effective option, although by paying $300+ I can buy her a MBA with M1 and bigger storage, but it will be overkilled for her purpose. And a dollar saved is a dollar earned.
But this time we choose to go Apple MBS for the repair, so that we can earn some reward points, hahaha.
The repair takes only 1 day, and the machine is ready for collection for the next day. Apple also provide 90 days warranty for the repair.
So far we are happy with the result, the machine feels like new now.
The lesson learned is, I will purchase Apple Care for my next Apple MacBook, if I ever decided to get one for myself in the future.
